But hold on I'm only 5 ft 1 !
In a fit of madness, yesterday, at aproximately 3:00 pm, i bought a song called "Ch Ching" by one Lady Sovereign, on iTunes. If you know any thing about SOV, you will realise this is the kind of music i do not usually listen to. That said, this must also be said, I enjoy this song immensly. SOV makes me dance, and very little hip-hop (from either side of the Atlantic) does this. It makes me regain my faith in medium that is mostly about doing crack off of the lower genetalia of ho's, while making sure said ho sees your gold plated scrotum.
Along with fellow Britons The Go! Team and M.I.A., SOV lacks the usual disregard for any actual flow or decent muscal style. M.I.A especially has become a hit among the indie kids, and this is a surprising, although not unexpected, event. For the ones who life to dance, at least, M.I.A. brand of rap is really not that far off from the Go! Team's brand of Rap/Funk, which is really not that far away from some of the more danceable indies guitar rock.
It makes sense that people would flock to both M.I.A and SOV, because unlike in rock, the rap is more than half the equation here. A good band can get away with a bad singer (see Kings Of Leon or early AC/DC) but you could put the beats Diplo gives to M.I.A under, say, Ludacris, and you still wouldn't have a half decent song. But since she can sound so good in a medium that requires not only an ability to rap, but the ability to think on your feet and control both rhyme and beat, and harness them together, M.I.A manages to attract the kids who like to dance.
